My last post The Olympics of Languages was about my journey of learning languages. Here is a playful poem I wrote in Stephanie Bolster’s class on the same subject. It was one of the first poems I wrote. I remember that I specifically wanted to write a joyful poem, so, reflecting upon the humorous mistakes I had made while learning five additional languages seemed like a natural place to start.
Here it is, as it was published in Yolk, an excellent literary magazine you should consider supporting.
And here is a link to a reading of the same poem for Yolk’s 2.2 issue launch. It was my first poetry reading and I was so nervous I almost walked away. But I’m glad I didn’t. It was a wonderful learning experience to hear the audience’s reaction to it.
May it encourage you to learn many more languages and find the joy in making some of the most embarrassing mistakes :)
Brilliant! Well done, Imola.
Such a beautiful poem. I remember catching the whole event on video, and the whole room was filled with laughter. Write, woman, write!
